Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy is non-invasive surgery used to treat kidney stones. This treatment is undergone if the kidney stones are too large to pass through the urinary tract. Lithotripsy involves sending focused ultrasonic energy directly to the stone, which breaks the stone apart so it can pass through.

Risks

  • Infection
  • Bleeding around the kidney
  • Obstruction of urinary tract

Prognosis

Lithotripsy surgery is normally a quick procedure and you will be sent home soon after. You may be given antibiotics after the procedure, but most patients experience immediate relief in passing their kidney stones after lithotripsy. Most people can return to normal activities within a couple days and have a follow-up appointment a few weeks later.
