Please select the video that corresponds to your prescribed medication to begin your learning journey.
Mini Bag Plus
Also located in the folder is your doctor's phone number, home health agency phone number if applicable, and a QR code to give access to the video you are watching. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least twenty seconds using soap and warm water or a disinfecting alcohol based hand sanitizer if you don't have access to soap and water. Refer to the hand washing procedure before infusing your medication sheet before infusing your medication. When finished washing your hands you will dry them with either a paper towel or a clean towel that is only for this one time.
Use the towel to turn off the faucet. Designate a clean area to infuse your IV medication. Clean the surface with an antibacterial wipe or soap. Review the label on your medication bag.
Make sure it has the correct name, correct drug, correct dose.
The medication should be clear and consistent in color and free of any visible particles. If any of these are incorrect or cause you concern, do not infuse and notify the pharmacy. Gather your supplies which will include two pre filled saline syringes, mini bag plus IV medication, IV tubing, a sterile protective cap, alcohol pads, at least four pads, and teaching sheets. Remove all the teaching sheets in the patient folder along with the consents that need to be signed and mailed back as soon as possible. Lay out all supplies to match the supply teaching sheet and follow along with the written instructions.
You can always refer to this video if you have any questions.
Prepare your syringes. Take the wrappers off all the saline flushes.
Hold each syringe upright. Loosen the cap on the syringe. Do not remove this cap and gently pull back the plunger and then push the plunger of the syringe until a small amount of solution comes out and then retighten the cap. Place back on supply layout sheet.
Prepare your mini bag plus. Refer to how to mix your medication in a mini bag plus sheet. Visually inspect the bag for any cloudiness or particulate matter. If the bag is cloudy or if particulate matter is present, do not use and notify pharmacy.
Squeeze bag and check vial. Use only if the vial is fully seated and dry.
Bend the connection between the bag and the vial adapter gently up and down as if breaking a pencil to break the seal. Hold bag up with vial down. Squeeze and release solution from bag into vial until half full.
Shake gently until solution is thoroughly mixed and appears clear, which may take a few minutes.
Now reverse procedure. Vial on top and bag on the bottom.
Squeeze and release bag to force air into vial. As you release pressure, the medication is sucked back into the bag. Repeat until vial is empty and all medication in the mini bag.
Preparing your IV bag. Refer to the written instructions provided or to this video.
Remove the IV tubing from the package leaving both protective caps on the end of the tubing.
The rate control comes out of the package set to open and the clamp on the tubing is open and it should be clamped as soon as the tubing is removed from the package.
Remove the blue plug from the port on your IV bag. Next pull off the protective cover from the spike of the tubing being careful not to touch the exposed port with your fingers and spike into the port of the bag using a push and twist motion. Hang the bag of medication on the IV pole. You are now ready to fill the tubing with medication.
This is called priming the line. Locate the drip chamber at the top of the IV tubing. Squeeze and release until the medication solution fills the chamber halfway. Do not remove the protective cap on the end of the tubing.
Open the clamp on the IV tubing and watch as the fluid moves down the tubing. When the medication drips a few drips at the end of the IV tubing, clamp the tubing. Tubing is now primed and ready to use. Twist the rate control to the rate as instructed on your teaching sheet.
Flushing your solo power PICC lines. If there is an extension set on your PICC with a swab cap on the end of your microclave valve, remove it and throw it away. These are not to be reused.
Then open an alcohol pad and clean the end of your microclave valve vigorously for at least fifteen seconds.
Do not ever remove the microclave valve.
If for some reason the microclave valve is removed or comes off, be sure to clamp your catheter and call your home health agency or pharmacy right away. Now remove the cap from the end of the first saline syringe and attach it to your microclave valve by pushing and twisting until it is firmly in place. Remember the end of the syringe is sterile. If you accidentally touch it with your hands or put it on a surface then it needs to be thrown away and you will need to get a new syringe. Unclamp your IV catheter if it has a clamp and push the plunger on the saline syringe using the push pause push method.
Push the plunger and pause. Push again until the syringe is empty. Do not force the flush if you have resistance. Contact your home health agency or pharmacy. After you complete this step, remove the syringe from the injection valve and throw it away. All supplies may be thrown away as we are not giving you any needles. Administer your medication.
You are now ready to administer your medication by attaching your primed IV tubing to your microclave valve. Open another alcohol pad and again clean the microclave valve vigorously for fifteen seconds. Do not let the microclave valve touch anything after this. Remove the protective cap from the end of the IV tubing, again being careful not to touch this sterile end.
Twist the end of the tubing into the microclave valve in a clockwise motion. Do not over tighten. Be sure that the flow control device is set to the rate. Open the clamp and you will see the medication is now dripping into the drip chamber. Make note of the time you started your infusion. It should finish in the time allotted or within ten minutes. Watch the drip chamber close to the end of the time so that you can clamp the IV tubing when the bag is empty.
It is best to still have some fluid left in the drip chamber. Disconnect the IV tubing from your catheter, taking care not to remove your microclave valve and place the sterile cap at the end of the IV tubing.
You will use the same tubing for seventy two hours.
Leave the IV tubing attached to the empty bag until your next dose is due. At that time, you will follow all the steps you've already completed removing the tubing from the used bag and spike a new bag with the same tubing.
You are now ready to flush your catheter with the next saline syringe. Be sure to clean the microclave valve with an alcohol pad for fifteen seconds.
Using the push pause push method, flush your catheter then throw away the saline syringe. If you have more than one lumen on your catheter, now would be a good time to flush.
Be sure to clean the microclave valve with an alcohol pad for fifteen seconds prior to flushing.
Congratulations.

Elastomeric Bulb
This video will illustrate a step by step process about how to administer your medication through your IV catheter with an elastomeric bulb. Please note that the products that are seen in this video may differ slightly in terms of color or size than what you receive at home. Your clinician or home health agency nurse will demonstrate all your supplies during your first visit. Included in your supplies is an anaphylaxis kit, which is an EpiPen and a Benadryl.
Refer to the treatment of allergic reactions in adults sheet in your patient folder. If you ever have any questions regarding this video or your supplies, contact our pharmacy. The number is on the front of the patient folder that you received with your first delivery. Also located in the folder is your doctor's phone number, home health agency phone number, if applicable, and a QR code to give access to this video you are watching.
Before you begin, if your medication is refrigerated, remember to take the elastomeric bulb out at least an hour before your medication is due. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least twenty seconds using soap and warm water or a disinfecting alcohol based hand sanitizer if you don't have access to soap and water. Refer to the hand washing procedure before infusing your medication sheet before infusing your medication. When finished washing your hands, you will dry them with either a paper towel or a clean hand towel that is only for this one time.
Use the towel to turn off the faucet. Designate a clean area to infuse your elastomeric bulb. Clean the surface with antibacterial wipe or soap. Review the label on your medication bag.
Make sure it has the correct name, correct drug, correct dose. Medication should be clear and consistent in color and free of any physical particles. If any of these are incorrect or cause you concern, do not infuse and notify the pharmacy. Gather your supplies, which include elastomeric bulb, alcohol pads, and teaching sheets.
These can be found in the patient folder along with the consents that need to be signed and mailed back as soon as possible. If for some reason the microclave valve is removed or comes off, be sure to clamp your catheter and call the home health agency or pharmacy right away. Remove the cap from the end of the first saline syringe.
Attach it to the micro clay valve by pushing and twisting until it is firmly in place.
Remember, the end of the syringe is sterile. If you accidentally touch it with your hands or put it on the surface, then it needs to be thrown away and you will need to get a new syringe.
And curl the tubing of the elastomeric device.
Clean the microclave valve located at the end of your pick vigorously for fifteen seconds. Remove the end cap of the tubing and attach this to your micro clay valve and twist it until firmly in place. Once you have connected the tubing, then open the clamp on the elastomeric tubing. Note the time that you open the clamp to start the infusion.
It will begin to get smaller in size and feel softer, which means it is going into your IV line. You can place the device in a pouch and go about your usual activities.
The tubing controls how quickly the medication goes into your IV lawn. Once the preset time ends, the device should be empty. You will know the infusion has completed when the device is deflated. Once the device is empty, clamp the tubing on the elastomeric tubing and remove it from your microclave valve. Discard the entire elastomeric bulb in the trash.
