Program Overview
Welcome to Baptist Health Corbin's PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Website. We appreciate your desire to learn about our American Society of Health-Systems (ASHP) accredited pharmacy residency program.
Corbin is located off Interstate 75 at Exit 25 (just 1 1/2 hours from Lexington, KY and Knoxville, TN) and is surrounded by the shores of Laurel Lake, amid the pristine beauty of the Daniel Boone National Forest and is home to the “Niagara of the South” at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. With nature trails, white water rafting, fishing, horseback riding, scenic beauty and wildlife, Corbin is the perfect destination for an outdoor adventure.
Within our institution, you will find a wealth of information to assimilate and the opportunity to be taught by a diverse, qualified, experienced, and dedicated pharmacist group. You'll have the opportunity to experience many diverse learning experiences including: internal medicine, critical care, neonatal care, oncology, mental health, transitions of care, infectious disease and ambulatory learning experiences. Our goal is to provide you with multiple educational opportunities in a wide variety of practice settings. You will be presented with opportunities for project management, teaching, and a wide variety of pharmacy practice experiences. Our expectation of you will be for you to engage in the program and insert yourself seriously into every opportunity that is provided.
We are dedicated to providing quality experiences throughout the residency program to ensure a consistent education. As the Residency Program Director, my goal is to provide you with a well-rounded PGY-1 experience that prepares you for board certification, a PGY-2, residency, or a career as an inpatient hospital pharmacist or ambulatory care pharmacist.
The primary purpose of the Baptist Health Pharmacy Residency Program is to graduate competent, well-rounded, confident pharmacists that are able to either practice independently in a community hospital setting or continue to a PGY2 residency program. Integration of an extensive pharmacotherapeutic knowledge base with application of clinical decision-making skills is the primary focus of the program. Additionally, the resident develops an understanding of drug distribution processes, updates and manages patient-specific medication regimens and develops interpersonal communication skills with other health care professionals. Participation in physician rounds, pharmacotherapeutic monitoring and direct patient assessment are utilized to promote confident and independent provision of pharmaceutical care. In addition to inpatient clinical activities, this program in an acute care community hospital setting will engage each of our residents in a large variety of transitions of care activities and a variety of ambulatory care clinic experiences
Additional goals of the program include increasing knowledge and skill in comprehensive pharmacy practice, clinical and didactic teaching, medication safety, and project management. In order to facilitate the adoption of comprehensive pharmacy practice, residents will be trained to formulate new drug policies, evaluate and implement process improvement, and perform drug therapy evaluations. As well, the program utilizes relationships with multiple colleges of pharmacy to provide opportunities to precept students, complete teaching certificate programs, conduct small group teaching discussions and deliver formal didactic lectures. In addition to these teaching experiences, residents will provide pharmacy and nursing education on various topics. The residency project provides the resident with the opportunity to develop, implement, and assess a pharmacy-related topic.
Baptist Health Corbin is a 273-acute care facility providing a wide variety of healthcare services to the residents of Whitley, Knox, Laurel, Bell, Clay, McCreary, and Harlan counties in Kentucky and nearby Jellico, Tennessee. The hospital offers a full continuum of care from inpatient care to rehab services to behavioral health. Additional services include an interventional cardiology program, orthopedics, OB/GYN, general surgery, level 2 nursery, and outpatient oncology.
As a nonprofit organization, Baptist Health Corbin has made a commitment to our community to provide care and services that go far beyond what is expected of a hospital, including charity care, education, community involvement, and partnerships.

Graduation and Certification: Upon successful completion of the residency program, the resident will receive a certificate verifying completion of the program in accordance with ASHP Regulations on Accreditation of Pharmacy Residencies.
All clinical training is provided at Baptist Health Corbin with the ambulatory clinics located in the attached medical office building. Hands on experience includes administering vaccinations, point of care testing, code response, vital sign assessments, and patient counseling.
Our residents are trained to improve patient outcomes by performing high quality medication use evaluations and completing a clinical research project.
During the residency year, residents will engage in diverse teaching experiences to enhance their instructional skills. These opportunities encompass various formats, including contribution to the development of written educational materials, formal or informal lectures delivered to pharmacy students, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, and precepting pharmacy students under the supervision of the resident's preceptors. Residents will complete the University of Kentucky Teaching Certificate Program (TCP), which prepares participants for future roles as clinician-educators and provides them with opportunities to gain teaching experience.
Additionally, residents will learn to apply the four preceptor roles while precepting pharmacy students and guiding them in the practical application of their current knowledge. This hands-on teaching approach involves reviewing patient charts, direct patient care in various pharmacist-managed clinics, problem-solving, counseling patients, and actively participating in admission and discharge medication reconciliation processes. Through this immersive educational model, residents play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Each resident will have the opportunity to complete 2 of the following elective learning experiences:
- Mental Health
- Critical Care II
Our residents will participate in a Resident Mentorship Program. The primary purpose of the Resident Mentorship Program is to provide the resident with another person that they can talk to and seek guidance from, in addition to the Program Director and their preceptors.

We encourage active learning, whereby residents are actively involved in their own learning and spend the majority of the time learning by providing care or contributing to pharmacy practice. In keeping with this, residents will be involved in their own learning through completing self-assessments of their needs, developing personal learning objectives, identifying strategies to achieve objectives and self-assessing their learning and progress. Residents are responsible and accountable for acquiring all competencies of the Program and in doing so, will be supported in their learning by their preceptors, mentors, teachers and the Program Director.
