What is Professional Fulfillment?
Professional fulfillment in this context refers to happiness or meaningfulness, self-worth,
self-efficacy and satisfaction at work.
Burnout, which is often considered opposite to engagement or fulfillment, is
related to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a loss of a sense of
professional fulfillment. These are the dimensions through which one experiences
burnout as defended by Dr. Christine Maslach who created the Maslach Burnout
Inventory or MBI. It is currently the ‘gold standard’ for the evaluation of burnout.
Dr. Malasch however also referred to burnout as an erosion of the soul, caused by
a deterioration of one’s values, dignity, spirit and will.
