What Are Red Light Panels and How Do They Work?

Red light panels have become a popular wellness trend in recent years. You may have seen them on social media or in a store. But what are they and do they actually work?

A red light panel is a device that gives off low levels of red or near-infrared light. The idea is that this light can reach your skin and the tissue beneath it to help your body heal and feel better.

What Is a Red Light Panel?

A red light panel is a flat device made up of LED lights. It can be small enough to sit on a table or large enough to mount on a wall. Some are made for your face while others can cover larger parts of your body.

The lights give off red or near-infrared wavelengths. You cannot feel heat from most panels. You simply sit or stand near the device for a set amount of time, usually around 10 to 20 minutes per session.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Red light therapy works by sending light into your skin. The light reaches your cells and may help them produce more energy. This boost in energy may help your cells repair and grow. It may also help reduce swelling.

This process is sometimes called photobiomodulation. It does not use UV light, which means it does not carry the same risks as tanning beds or getting too much sun.

What Does the Research Say?

Some early research suggests red light therapy may help in a few health-related areas. These include skin health such as wrinkles and acne, hair growth, wound healing, joint and muscle pain and swelling.

Some of these uses have stronger evidence than others. Skin health and hair growth have the most research behind them so far. Other claims like weight loss or mood changes do not have strong evidence yet.

Results also seem to vary depending on the type of device and how often it is used. It is important to know that most studies are still small. More research is needed before we fully understand how well red light therapy works.

Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

Red light therapy is thought to be safe for most people. It does not use UV rays so it does not raise your risk of skin cancer.

But there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Wear eye protection when using a panel near your face.
  • Talk to your Baptist Health provider if you take medicines that make your skin more sensitive to light.
  • Speak with your provider if you have a history of skin cancer or eye problems.

At-home panels are weaker than those used in a clinic. Results may take weeks or months of regular use before you notice a change.

If you are thinking about trying red light therapy, it is a good idea to talk with your Baptist Health primary care provider first. They can help you decide if it makes sense for your health goals. If you don't have a provider, you can find one using our provider directory.
