Is Hip Replacement Surgery Painful?
If you're thinking about hip replacement surgery, you might wonder if it hurts more or less than how your hips feel right now. There is some pain but most people feel from mild to no pain during recovery. The majority of people report far less pain than before the procedure.
Does Hip Replacement Surgery Hurt?
During the surgery, you'll likely be under anesthesia. This blocks all pain during surgery. Your surgeon might also give you a light sedative to help you relax. The procedure will take about one to two hours.
What Pain Feels Like Right After Surgery
In the first few days, you might feel some soreness and mild pain. Swelling around your hip is common. Most people go home on the same day. In some cases, you might stay overnight in the hospital.
When you do go home, you'll probably take a walker or crutches with you to help with movement while you recover. Treating your hip with rest, ice and early movement can reduce any pain you do feel. Your orthopedic provider might also prescribe pain medication to help you manage discomfort.
What Hip Pain Is Like in the First Few Weeks After Surgery
During the first few weeks after hip replacement surgery, your pain usually lessens. Some pain with movement is normal. You'll likely start physical therapy during this stage. Physical therapy helps build strength in your hip. You might even join Baptist Health's total knee and hip replacement program.
