  • Cryptorchidism. This condition is the absence of at least one testicle from the scrotum and a common genital problem encountered in pediatrics.
  • Cystocele. This condition occurs when the ligaments that hold up the bladder stretch and weaken, causing a prolapsed bladder.
  • Erectile dysfunction. This condition occurs when there is an inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.
  • Incontinence. This condition can happen in males or females and occurs when there is an involuntary loss of urine or feces (typically urine).
  • Interstitial cystitis. Also known as painful bladder syndrome, this condition causes chronic bladder and pelvic pain and sometimes a constant urge to urinate, regardless of whether the bladder is full.
  • Hydrocele. This condition is a swelling of the scrotum, which holds the testicles.
  • Hydronephrosis. This condition occurs when urine cannot drain, causing swelling of the kidneys.
  • Kidney cancer. This condition occurs when abnormal cells grow and develop into tumors.
  • Kidney infection. Also known as pyelonephritis, this condition occurs when there is inflammation of the kidneys, usually caused by a virus or bacteria.
  • Kidney stones. This condition causes hard mineral or salt deposits to form in the kidneys and, depending on the size of the stone, may be painful as they travel through the urinary tract.
  • Low testosterone. This occurs when you have low levels of testosterone hormone in the body.
  • Male infertility. This condition usually occurs when there is a low sperm count, sperm malfunctions, or blocked sperm pathways that have made it impossible to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • Neurogenic bladder. This condition occurs when there is a loss of control over urination resulting from nerve or muscle damage.
  • Overactive bladder. This is a common condition that occurs when there is a frequent, sudden and urgent need to urinate.
  • Perineum pain. Perineum pain can affect both men and women. This condition occurs when there is chronic pain in the perineum region.

  • Phimosis. This condition occurs when the foreskin of the penis is tight and can't be pulled back over the head of the penis.
  • Priapism. This condition occurs when there is a persistent, typically painful, erection lasting more than four hours and occurring without sexual stimulation.
  • Prostate cancer. This is a slow-growing and common cancer in men that, if detected early, is quite treatable.
  • Prostate inflammation. This condition occurs when there is a painful inflammatory infection in the prostate gland.
  • Testicular cancer. This is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the male reproductive glands inside the scrotum and develops tumors.
  • Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction. This condition occurs when the junction, which attaches the ureter to the kidney, is blocked.
  • Urethral stricture. This condition occurs when there is a physiological restriction of the urinary tube.
  • Urinary tract infection. This treatable condition occurs when germs or unwanted material enter the urinary tract and cause an infection.
  • Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR). This condition occurs when urine flows backward from the bladder toward the ureters and kidneys.
  • Varicocele. This condition occurs when there is an enlarged vein in the scrotum, which may be painful.

Comprehensive Urologic Care Services

Baptist Health offers a wide range of urologic care services. Services include:

  • Adrenal treatment. There are a wide range of adrenal treatments, including medication to replace hormones that are not being produced, other medications, radiation, or surgery.
  • Botox treatment. This type of treatment is typically used when other treatments have been unsuccessful. Injecting Botox into the muscles of the bladder may help to reduce symptoms of overactive bladder.
  • Cystoscopy procedure. This procedure is used to check the health of your urethra and bladder.
  • Cryosurgery. This treatment freezes the prostate gland to destroy cancer cells.
  • Da Vinci robotic surgery. This is a minimally invasive urologic surgery that uses robotic controls.
  • Laparoscopy. Also known as keyhole surgery, this minimally invasive surgery is often used in a variety of urologic conditions.
  • Laser prostate ablation (enucleation). This treatment option for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia includes a targeted application of lasers to the prostate’s enlarged tissues.
  • Lithotripsy. This non-invasive surgery treats kidney stones by sending highly focused ultrasonic energy directly to the stone to break it apart.
  • Penile prosthesis. This treatment uses an implantable device to correct erectile dysfunction, specifically when there is a medical cause for the ED and it is unlikely to naturally resolve without the use of these instruments.
  • Percutaneous nerve stimulation. This procedure is used to treat overactive bladder, urinary urgency, and urgency incontinence. This is typically only used if a patient has not experienced relief from pelvic floor exercises and medications.
  • Prostate biopsy. This procedure takes a sample of tissue to detect prostate cancer.
  • Sacral neuromodulation. This treatment uses an implanted device to send mild electric impulses to stimulate nerves that control your bladder and bowels.
  • Transurethral incision of prostate (TUIP). This is a minimally invasive surgery used for urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.
  • Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). This minimally invasive surgery treats urinary blockage caused by an enlarged prostate by using an instrument to remove the excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow.
  • Ureteroscopy. This is an outpatient procedure used for diagnosing and treating various problems in the urinary tract by inserting a small, flexible scope.
  • Urinary diversion procedure. This procedure is used to redirect the flow of urine when there is a blockage or a diseased part of the body.
  • Urodynamic testing. These types of tests or procedures assess the functioning of the bladder, sphincters, and urethra.
  • Vasectomy. This procedure closes off the vas deferens and is usually performed as a means of contraception or male sterilization.

FAQ

Can You See a Urologist Without a Referral?

It isn’t always required, but many insurance plans and clinics still prefer a referral from your primary care provider or an emergency-room clinician. A referral ensures your urologist receives your medical history and any relevant test results, streamlining the visit.

What Are Three Conditions a Urologist Might Treat for Their Patients?

Common urologic issues include kidney stones, urinary-tract infections (UTIs) and erectile or other sexual dysfunction. Kidney stones are typically managed with hydration recommendations, medication or procedures such as lithotripsy. UTIs are treated with antibiotics and preventive counseling. Sexual-function concerns may involve medication, lifestyle changes or specialized therapies.
