Volunteer Opportunities at Baptist Health Paducah

Since its beginning in 1953, Baptist Health Paducah's Auxiliary has played a major role in providing hospitality services to patients and families and raising funds for the purchase of equipment and educational materials.

Current membership consists of more than 300 individuals who have a broad base of experience and represent a variety of age groups. Members contribute some 30,000 volunteer hours to the hospital every year. Many members see the Auxiliary as a way to add fulfillment to their lives. Our volunteers make a difference by providing all the little extras our patients have come to appreciate.

The auxiliary's primary purpose is to assist hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Volunteers work in more than 14 different areas of Baptist Health Paducah, including information desks, transport, the chaplains' office and various waiting rooms. In addition, the auxiliary operates the gift shop and sponsors LIFELINE, a residential emergency response system.

The Auxiliary also raises money to purchase equipment, educational materials, Bibles for babies and scholarships. Funds are raised through gift shop operations, book sales, bake sales, an annual quilt show and other events. Through their fundraising efforts, the Auxiliary has been involved with every new addition to Baptist Health Paducah.

Youth Volunteer Program at the Child Development Center

The Child Development Center at Baptist Health Paducah sponsors a summer youth volunteer program to acquaint teens with caregiver roles for young children. To participate, teens must be 13 years or older.

Each student is assigned to work with a teacher so he or she is able to bond with the children throughout the summer. Volunteers make games and child development manipulatives; work one-on-one with children at the center's computers and other learning activities; and perform office functions, including making copies and laminating materials.

About 25 volunteers work in the Child Development Center each summer and some stay on throughout the school year. Students earn community service hours which can be used for honor societies and service organizations.

The students are not allowed to lift any of the children and receive training in first aid and choking prevention.
