It's important for women to have regular breast cancer screenings so we can attempt to identify breast cancer at a very early stage. Mammograms are used for screening and they're used to try to detect cancers before they can be felt from the outside of the breast. The mammogram itself does not cause any sort of excessive trauma to the tissue or cause cancer itself. If we are able to find a breast cancer early, then sometimes we can avoid having to do additional therapies.

Potentially, we can avoid having to do radiation therapy. And ideally, we avoid having to do chemotherapy in general. So early detection really allows us to target the therapies to a very early stage breast cancer. When a patient comes in with a newly diagnosed breast cancer, we recognize that that can be one of the most scariest and devastating days of their life.

And it's important for the patient to realize that I'm fighting the same fight they are. We are in this together, and our goal is to achieve the optimum level of survival outcomes for them. So I really work hard to make sure that I answer any questions that patients have as far as what is their specific pathology, what is their specific treatment algorithm, and how can we make sure that they live the best possible life that they can after therapy is complete. We want to make sure that you feel comfortable and well cared for, and that's something that we take a lot of pride in here at Baptist Health in Corbin.
