It's important for women to have regular breast cancer screenings so we can attempt to identify breast cancer at a very early stage. Mammograms are used for screening, and they're used to try to detect cancers before they can be felt from the outside of the breast. The mammogram itself does not cause any sort of excessive trauma to the tissue or cause cancer itself.
If we are able to find breast cancer early, then sometimes, we can avoid having to do additional therapies. Potentially, we can avoid having to do radiation therapy, and ideally, we avoid having to do chemotherapy in general. Early detection allows us to target the therapies to an early-stage breast cancer.
When a patient comes in with newly diagnosed breast cancer, we recognize that can be one of the scariest and most devastating days of their life, and it's important for the patient to realize that I am fighting the same fight they are. We are in this together, and our goal is to achieve the optimum level of survival outcomes for them. I really work hard to make sure that I answer any questions that patients have as far as their specific pathology, their specific treatment algorithm, and how we can make sure they live the best possible life after therapy is complete.
