Harrison Daniel, MD:
Colonoscopy uses a flexible tube with a camera attached that's able to look throughout your colon, specifically for polyps or any mass that's a concern for colon cancer. If I see these polyps are a little gross, I take them out. Additionally, I'm looking for anything that's concerning for a mass or cancer. If I see that, I'll biopsy or get a tissue sample to send to the pathologist to make a diagnosis.
It's important to keep up on your screenings, primarily to diagnose colon cancer early. Treating colon cancer early leads to better outcomes. If colon cancer goes untreated, it can spread to other parts of your body and lead to death. That is why it's important to catch it as soon as we can.
The benefit of having your colonoscopy done at Baptist [Health] La Grange is it's close to home. You don't need to drive to Louisville to have it done. As far as getting scheduled for a colonoscopy, [we] tend to do it very quickly, within a month, and get the results back to patients quickly as well. It’s a benefit; you don't need to wait a long time to get your screening done.
Getting a colonoscopy is easy. [It] takes 15 to 30 minutes but can give you peace of mind knowing that you're clear for you and your family and that you can move on with your life.
