Ajay Kumar, MD:
What diabetes is, is basically either a lack of insulin or a relative lack of insulin. That means there is a discoordination between the blood glucose and the insulin that is being produced to take care of that glucose. That's basically Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Madison Huff, patient:
I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2019. I was originally in the hospital for what I thought was the flu, and then they told me I had Type 1; it definitely changed my life.
Ajay Kumar, MD:
Diabetes is not a reversible disease. It's a manageable disease. It's a chronic condition. The idea is to first make lifestyle changes to mostly consume a high-protein, low-carb diet; maintain three meals a day; avoid any snacking; [and] engage in good physical activity, and it does not have to be very aggressive.
Every individual, every human, has his own capacity to do the best of their ability.
When lifestyle modifications have not been able to control blood sugars, then the management of diabetes is to keep it under control by using medications, either insulin or non-insulin-based therapies that can be used to help get control of the diabetes and take command of it.
Madison Huff, patient:
The changes in my diet and eating habits have helped. They've helped keep my blood sugar under control. I don't have to take as much insulin. I feel like I have better control over my life. Being able to have that control and have the help I need has helped me a lot.
