Austin Miser, patient:
The last day of our vacation, we were going out and walking through a stream in the Smoky Mountains, and I slipped on a mossy rock and broke my ankle. I couldn't get myself up out of the water.
It took me about 10, 15 minutes to pull myself out, and I had a lot of time to sit there and be like, "What have I done to myself?" I just knew that I had to change my lifestyle. I had to get fit. I had to get past this burden that was holding me down.
Lanny Gore, MD:
Bariatric surgery is using surgery to help people lose weight. We manipulate either the stomach or intestine to help people feel fuller faster and to help digest their food in a way that helps them lose weight. The surgery involves a laparoscopic procedure. We're able to do the procedure with four very small incisions. It's one night in the hospital. You can expect some soreness from your incisions for two or three days. There's a lot of people who have the surgery and are back to work within a week.
Austin Miser, patient:
Since having the surgery and going through and seeing the results that I have, I realized that food is fuel for your body. It's there to give you the energy that you need to go and do the other things you want to achieve in your life.
Which for me, I realized, "Hey, I can go and I can run for a mile and not feel so winded." One mile became two miles, which became 5K, which became 10K. This year I ran the Derby marathon here in Louisville, Kentucky, and it was amazing.
