A sleep study is basically a diagnostic test [that] can be done at home as well as in a sleep lab, depending on the situation. Most of the patients actually require a sleep study at home. That can be done easily, the patient stays in the home environment, gets a little equipment from the sleep lab, and puts it on.
We monitor snoring, oxygen level, breathing pattern, heart rhythm and body position. The data we get through the sleep study helps us diagnose a condition called sleep-disordered breathing, or sleep apnea. We do the sleep study and find out what the problem is. For example, if the problem is obstructive sleep apnea, we give them a machine called [an] AutoPAP.
As soon as the patient gets used to the equipment, they feel much better. Their blood pressure also starts getting better. They get a restful sleep. They're more vigilant during the daytime, and no more sleepiness. [The] snoring is gone. Even their spouse is getting a better night's sleep. They're so happy, they feel like a different person. They have more energy. Their life is completely changed. The risk of coronary artery disease or heart attack goes down when you start treating sleep apnea. Treating sleep apnea actually has a survival benefit. Patients live better, breathe better and live longer.
