Peripheral vascular disease is blockages in your blood vessels in the arms, in the legs, in the kidneys,

in the neck, so other arteries other than the heart.

The risk factors are smoking, diabetes, a family history, diet,

and even if you have heart disease, peripheral disease is something we should be looking

for as well.

One of the most common causes is fatty plaque.

It starts off slowly, increases in size, and ultimately shuts down the blood vessel.

Now, if you start developing ulcers and your leg is at risk for being cut off,

if your pain's occurring at rest, those are signs that we need to intervene sooner

rather than later.

The interventions are pretty simple and similar to what we do for the heart.

It's done in the cardiac cath lab.

We go in through the groin.

Sometimes we can go in from the wrist, and we use equipment that helps cut the plaque,

break it down, and typically we use balloons.

As a last resort, we use stents to keep the blockages from coming back.

Being able to provide this procedure here locally will enable the surrounding community to seek treatment

for this deadly disease here and prevent a lot of limb amputations.

It will for sure save a lot of limbs.
