Heart disease is a condition in which there is a cholesterol buildup in the arteries in the heart. How can we prevent that? Number one is, do not smoke, please. Second is exercise. When the blood moves fast in the body, it prevents the cholesterol and calcium buildup within the heart arteries. Modify your diet, and that should be persistent over a long period of time. Reduce your stress in your life. Sleep well.

I would also recommend that you should have an annual physical exam with your doctor. Ask questions about the health of your heart, because he may want to order testing, like electrocardiogram, stress testing, and also blood tests to reveal if there is inflammation in the vessels in the heart arteries.

Baptist Health Floyd provides comprehensive care to patients with acute and chronic heart conditions. Our cardiac team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for heart attacks and any emergencies.

The most fulfilling and rewarding thing in my profession is when a person comes in with acute heart attack, and you take care of them in the middle of night. The next morning, then he’s feeling better and says, “Thank you, doctor.” I think that is priceless.
