Spring allergies on the rise
PADUCAH, KY (April 21, 2026) — Now that spring has arrived, rising pollen counts are bringing more than warmer weather, with 11.7% of Kentucky adults and 6.8% of children living with asthma, seasonal allergies are impacting families across the region.
“Seasonal allergies occur when the immune system reacts to environmental triggers like pollen,” said John Busclas, MD, Baptist Health Medical Group Family Medicine. “That response releases chemicals such as histamines, which lead to the symptoms many people experience this time of year.”
Seasonal allergies can affect people of all ages, from infants to older adults. Common symptoms include sneezing, itchy, swollen, or watery eyes, nasal congestion, coughing, fatigue, and post-nasal drip.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Kentucky consistently ranks among the most challenging states for seasonal allergies, with symptoms stretching from early spring through late fall. In western Kentucky, the humid and mild climate creates ideal conditions for allergens like ragweed, grass pollen, and mold spores to thrive.
While allergies are common, Dr. Busclas recommends individuals take the following steps to reduce exposure and manage symptoms:
- Stay indoors on windy days when pollen levels are high.
- Avoid mowing the lawn during peak pollen season.
- Change clothes and shower after spending time outdoors.
- Use over-the-counter nasal sprays (specifically nasal saline and intranasal steroids), antihistamines, or eye drops as needed.
- Keep windows and doors closed, especially at night.
- Use a dehumidifier to limit indoor allergens.
- Bathe pets regularly to reduce pollen tracked indoors.
A primary care provider can help determine whether symptoms are allergy-related and recommend a personalized treatment plan. This may include allergy testing to identify specific triggers or immunotherapy (allergy shots) for long-term relief. For individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, allergies can worsen symptoms and should be addressed promptly.
