Baptist Health Paducah highlights the health benefits of adopting hobbies this spring
PADUCAH, KY (April 30, 2026) — As spring brings longer days and warmer weather, many people are looking for ways to refresh their routines. Health experts say adopting hobbies this spring can benefit both mental and physical well being.
Hobbies and leisure activities provide opportunities to relax, stay engaged and add balance to daily life. Research shows that people who regularly participate in enjoyable activities often experience improved mood, better overall health and greater life satisfaction. According to the American Psychiatric Association, nearly half of Americans use creative activities as a way to support their mental well being.
“Hobbies are more than just a way to fill free time, they play an important role in supporting overall health,” said Teri Stapleton, MD, Baptist Health Medical Group Primary Care. “Engaging in activities you enjoy can improve mood, increase mental resilience and contribute to better quality of life.”
Studies suggest the benefits of hobbies extend beyond emotional well being. Leisure activities have been shown to positively influence the body’s endocrine, immune and central nervous systems. When these systems function well, individuals may experience a lower risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and stroke.
The impact of hobbies is especially notable among older adults. A 2023 study from Harvard Medical School involving more than 93,000 adults ages 65 and older found that those who regularly participated in hobbies reported better overall health, greater happiness, fewer symptoms of depression and higher life satisfaction.
In addition to mental wellness, many hobbies can support physical health. Activities such as gardening, walking, painting, reading or playing music have been associated with lower blood pressure and reduced levels of stress related hormones, helping the body better regulate itself.
Dr. Stapleton encourages individuals to use the spring season as an opportunity to explore new interests or return to activities they once enjoyed. Whether it’s a creative pursuit, an outdoor hobby or simply setting aside intentional time to relax.
“Making time for hobbies is a simple way to take care of yourself and support long term health,” added Dr. Stapleton.
