Only about 10% of women over the age of 65 have normal bone mass.

RICHMOND, KY, (April 4, 2023)Baptist Health Richmond has updated its health and wellness services available to men and women with the addition of the Horizon™ bone densitometry system from Hologic.

Osteoporosis affects millions of women and men worldwide. Only about 10% of women over the age of 65 have normal bone mass and 77 percent of American women with osteoporosis are undiagnosed (and therefore untreated). Fortunately, osteoporosis is detectable and treatable and testing is safe and non-invasive.

“The installation of the new Horizon DXA system brings cutting edge technology to the communities we serve. The system is faster, has a higher patient weight capacity and lowers to the ground to allow easier access for patients.” said Kim Richards, MBA, PharmD, vice president of clinical support and ancillary services at Baptist Health Richmond. “The system is now conveniently located in the outpatient services area, directly inside the hospital South Entrance.  The relocation of the system provides patients the opportunity to quickly register and receive their scan.”

The imaging technology of the Horizon DXA system provides superb image quality with advanced diagnostic tools to support early detection and treatment of osteoporosis. Horizon enables new dimensions in care, including greater insights into biomechanical strength, visualization of calcification in the abdominal aorta that can indicate heart disease, lumbar spine and proximal femur studies, BMD measurements of the entire skeleton, atypical femur fracture (AFF) assessment, and many other clinical applications.

The purchase of the Horizon DXA system was made possible through the generosity received at the Baptist Health Foundation Richmond.

“The Horizon DXA system is just one incredible example of how donor generosity has and will continue to make a difference at Baptist Health Richmond,” said Kari Martin, director of Baptist Health Foundation Richmond. “We are truly grateful for all who help us provide exceptional service to our patients through generous support of the hospital.”
