Baptist Health Richmond now offers robotic-assisted surgery to patients
RICHMOND, KY (September 21, 2023) – Baptist Health Richmond now has the most advanced robotic technology – the da Vinci Xi Robot from Intuitive.
“I am so excited Baptist Health Richmond is now offering robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for our community,” said Greg D. Gerard, president of Baptist Health Richmond. “As we look to advance our mission and provide an exceptional experience for our patients, this technology will greatly support us in this effort.”
The new da Vinci Xi Surgical System allows physicians to operate robotically for a number of complex surgeries including bariatric, gynecology and obstetrics, urology and general surgeries. Advantages of the robot include smaller incisions, less blood loss during surgery, fewer complications, and shorter recovery periods.
Physicians will use the high-tech da Vinci robot to help perform minimally invasive procedures. The robot seamlessly translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient in an area smaller than would be required for the surgeon’s hands.
“The da Vinci Xi allows us to provide care in a new, exciting way for our patients. But it also ensures we are providing the support our physicians need to be able to work longer in the professions we love,” said Erica Gregonis, MD, chief medical officer and vice president of Baptist Health Richmond. “Decreasing the stress on a surgeon’s body compared to conventional surgery means less joint pain and injuries.”
The new robot’s design, which integrates the operating table with the robotic technology, is more efficient and practical, which aids the surgeon and can shorten surgery time for patients.
“I am so thankful Baptist Health made this investment for our community to have access to the most advanced robotic technology. It is a proud moment for Baptist Health Richmond,” Gerard said.
