Baptist Health Floyd nursing leadership recently presented the national DAISY Award to Haley Bickers, RN, in its Medical Inpatient unit.
In a nomination letter, Bickers was described by the family, “Haley showed us respect, compassion and love while we were at the hospital with our mom. When she passed by and saw me upset, she stopped and listened to me ramble about my mom. She was amazing, observant and caring. I truly feel that to her this isn’t a job, but her gift from God.”
As part of the DAISY ceremonial recognition, the winning nurses receive a certificate of recognition as an “exceptional nurse,” a DAISY award pin and a hand-crafted stone sculpture entitled “A Heart’s Touch.” Cinnamon rolls are also given to the winning nurse’s unit at this time as a message to each that when they smell the aroma of a cinnamon roll, stop and think how special they are because they are nurses.
The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym for Disease Attacking the Immune System. During Patrick’s eight-week hospitalization, his family experienced the best in nursing care and compassion provided to Pat and everyone in his family. One of the goals they set in creating a foundation in Pat’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses and to thank them for the gifts nurses give their patients and families every day, just as they had experienced.
