Baptist Health Madisonville opens retail pharmacy for Meds to Beds program
(Madisonville, Ky.) August 13, 2018 — Baptist Health Madisonville recently opened a retail outpatient pharmacy off the main lobby entrance on the second floor of the hospital.
The pharmacy, which has been on campus serving employees and their families for years, has expanded to offer a larger selection of over-the-counter medications in this new space.
With this expansion, the pharmacy also is being used for the hospital’s new Meds to Beds program, which allows patients to get their medicine before they leave the hospital. The program has proven to help patients transition back to home, as well as prevent readmissions and improve outcomes.
“We have found that stopping on the way home to fill the newly prescribed medication is not always convenient after someone has been in the hospital, and so many patients do not start their medications on time or at all,” said Margo Ashby, Director of Pharmacy Services. “This can lead to poor outcomes, a hospital readmission and other expensive complications. Having the pharmacy right here where family members or patients can get these new medications in-hand before leaving has shown to help with this issue. Our pharmacists are also here to assist in transferring subsequent refills to your regular pharmacy if you so choose.”
Patients eligible for the Meds to Beds program may notify their nurse that they want any new prescriptions delivered to the hospital room before discharge. Patients are responsible for medication costs of home prescriptions, and most insurance plans are accepted.
The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 7 am until 6 pm and can be reached by calling 270.825.5954.
