(Wednesday, May 5): Baptist Health Richmond named its second DAISY Award winner on Wednesday, May 4. The prestigious recognition was awarded to Sajen Spicer, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Baptist Health Richmond for more than four years.
DAISY nominations are submitted by patients, visitors, nurses and employees. Spicer was nominated by a patient. A portion of her nomination form stated: “Sajen went on to share her own personal experience for what I’m going through. She is so nice, caring and an amazing nurse – best one I’ve ever had.”
The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases attaching the immune system. During Patrick’s eight week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Patrick but to everyone in his family. One of the goals the family set in creating the Foundation in Patrick’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make a difference.
“Sajen is a huge asset to our Emergency Department at Baptist Health Richmond. She always goes above and beyond for each and every one of her patients. We’re very lucky to have her as a part of our team,” said Lora King, RN, director of Emergency Services at Baptist Health Richmond.
Each recipient of the DAISY Award receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch. Everyone in the unit also celebrates with cinnamon rolls, which was a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness.
If you would like to nominate an extraordinary nurse at Baptist Health Richmond, nomination forms are located throughout the facility. For more information about the DAISY Foundation, please visit www.DAISYfoundation.org.
