- [Amelia] I had just had my first and only baby shower
on March 16th.

And in March 17th, I went into pre-term labor,
and I ended up having to deliver Schaffer at 32 weeks.

And there was a need for him to come to Baptist
and they had that ability, too,

because of the NICU transport team.

- [Dr. O'Neill] What a Level 3 NICU means for a
hospital like Baptist Health Paducah is we can keep

babies here that a Level 2 can't keep.

So we can keep babies on ventilators longer.

We can go down to a lower gestational age of an infant.

And so we can really keep sicker babies
here locally versus, in the past,

we'd have to send them out to
a Level 3 or Level 4 nursery.

- It was really hard to leave the hospital and be
rolled out of the hospital on a wheelchair

with no baby.

Having a baby is stressful,
and then having a baby that requires NICU care is

even more stressful.

The ability to stay locally gives a family the sense of
stability that they need during one of the most

critical times in their lives.

And so our family's very thankful that the community
saw the need for a NICU 10 years ago and has continued

to make the investment in the NICU
to make it what it is today.

Schaffer's a happy, and healthy,
and growing two-year-old little boy,

and it's a pure joy to have this little boy.

What a Level 3 NICU means for a hospital like Baptist Health Paducah is that we can keep babies here that a Level 2 can’t keep. We can keep babies on ventilators longer. We can go down to a lower gestational age of an infant. We can keep sicker babies here locally, versus in the past, we’d have to send them out to a Level 3 or Level 4 nursery.
