As part of the aging process, we all develop some degree of loose skin on our face, and that may include around our eyes. At times, excess skin is so severe that it's actually lying on top of someone's lashes and interfering with their vision. Blepharoplasty is a procedure focused on removing excess skin on the upper eyelids. One of the biggest misconceptions is that blepharoplasty [is] performed only for cosmetic reasons.
When patients present to me for evaluations, they oftentimes complain of decreased vision, a tired look, worsening headaches, having to tilt their head when they're driving, or feeling like their eyes are getting really tired toward the end of the day. Here at Baptist Health Hardin, we offer blepharoplasty. We can assess if there's a need to repair the droopiness of eyelids and tighten the muscles that raise your eyelid.
Most of the healing happens in the first six weeks, and scars stay reddish at first. However, eyelid skin is the thinnest skin in our body, and it's quite forgiving and heals very favorably. After three to six months, usually scars fade and are not even noticeable to a naked eye. Patients are oftentimes surprised at how much their vision improves after this procedure, and it leads to profound results and significant improvement in a patient's quality of life.
