Uncontrolled diabetes can cause nerve damage, and patients with diabetes can have burning, numbness, sharp or shooting pain in both their legs, feet, and sometimes in the hands as well. There are medications that can help with diabetic neuropathy, but sometimes medications are just not enough, and that's when we offer different options. One of the treatments that we offer is called spinal cord stimulator, which is a small device that goes under the skin. It sends out gentle electrical signals to the spinal cord that helps decrease the pain signaling going from your feet and legs to the brain, and that's how it helps the diabetic neuropathy pain.

Patients who have failed multiple medications, this would be the next step. We do a simple trial, which is a minimally invasive procedure. It takes about thirty minutes, very similar to doing an epidural injection. And then patients go home and try this device for about five to seven days.

This is the unique thing about this stimulator that patients get to try before they talk about permanent implant. We are able to offer this treatment locally so patients don't have to travel to other centers or even going across the river. So we could provide this treatment and they should be helpful for that neuropathy. So if you have tried multiple medications for diabetic neuropathy, but still having persistent pain that is affecting your life, quality of life, and sleep, this is something that you should consider talking to your physician about.

There is hope and we could help with this.
