Baptist Health Louisville Diabetes Prevention Program starting January 11

December 27, 2017

The cost of diabetes is staggering. In 2012, the average annual medical cost for a person diagnosed with diabetes was about $13,700, with almost $8,000 in cost for diabetes care. That's 2.3 times greater than medical costs for a person who does not have diabetes. Even more devastating is the cost to one's health and life from tripling a person's chances of developing heart disease to an increased risk of limb removal or loss of eye sight.

Losing weight, moving more and managing stress are key elements of the year-long Diabetes Prevention Program to help those with pre-diabetes reduce their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Baptist Health Louisville will offer the year-long Diabetes Prevention Program starting on January 11 from 6-7 p.m. in the hospital’s Education Center.

The program includes 16 weekly session followed by six monthly sessions. During the one-hour sessions, participants meet in a small group setting with a trained lifestyle coach. Session topics range from eating healthier, reading food labels, overcoming stress, getting physically active and staying motivated.

The goal of the program is to achieve a five to seven percent body weight loss and increase physical activity to a minimum of 150 minutes throughout the duration of the program.

To qualify, participants must meet the following criteria:

·         Must be 18 years or older AND have a BMI equal to or greater than 24, or if Asian, greater than 22; and must have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes through one the following ways:

o   A1C of 5.7 to 6.4

o   Glucose Tolerance Test results of 140 to 199

o   Clinically diagnosed Gestational Diabetes during previous pregnancy (may be self-reported)
