Baptist Health Paducah’s Residency Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Baptist Health Paducah is designed to expand on the education provided by a PharmD curriculum and prepare its graduates for positions in clinical pharmacy practice or continuance to a specialty residency training. The PGY1 residency program is designed to enable the resident to engage in progressive pharmacy services in a variety of clinical settings for an acute care regional hospital. The resident is exposed to clinical and professional elements important to current practices of pharmacy. In addition to rotations and longitudinal activities, responsibilities include participation in committee meetings and initiatives, precepting students, presenting classroom lectures and conducting valuable research to improve pharmacy services. Resident experiences are customized and adapted throughout the year to allow them to meet their individual goals. Residency preceptors challenge the resident to excel in a supportive community environment and prepare them to be future leaders in the pharmacy profession.
Baptist Health Paducah is a 373-bed, acute and skilled care facility providing a high-level of care to the residents of the suburban and rural Jackson Purchase Area. The hospital offers a full continuum of care from cardiac and cancer care, diagnostic imaging, women’s and children’s services, Level III NICU, surgery, emergency treatment, rehabilitation, transitional care, weight management and wound care. The pharmacy’s mission is to provide safe and effective pharmaceutical care to the patients of Baptist Health Paducah.
Our residency program is affiliated with the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. The UK College of Pharmacy combines innovative teaching and hands-on interactive learning in a world premier facility. They provide the type of education that produces leaders in the field, which is evident in their nationally ranked Top 10 program. The College offers a four-year PharmD degree as well as MS and PhD degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and continues to offer innovative solutions around pharmacy practice and drug delivery. Via this affiliation with the college, our residents will be enrolled in the Teaching Certificate for Pharmacists Program as offered by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. The college provides teaching opportunities in the classroom and Patient Care Laboratory to help fulfill the requirements of the program.
