Pre-Med Academy at Baptist Health Paducah

To assist area students in their medical career development and to foster relationships with future physicians, the Baptist Health Pre-Med Academy accepts 15 high-performing students from eight counties of the Jackson Purchase for its summer program each year.

If you think you want to go to medical school, the Baptist Health Pre-Med Academy is for you.

  • See if you like medicine! Shadowing physicians and working in several hospital departments, ranging from the Emergency department to Surgery, will give you an inside look at this rewarding career.
  • Medical schools prefer applicants who know what they want to do and why. Working in the field gives you a unique perspective for your interviews and application essays.
  • Get paid, and start your networking now! This is not an unpaid internship; you can earn some college money while you gain important insight to see if this career is right for you. And you will get to know members of the Paducah medical community, who can become valuable contacts for you in the coming years.

The program begins in early June with a thorough orientation and continues for about eight weeks, rotating with physicians and other medical professionals through areas, including Emergency, Cardiology, Family Medicine, Neurology-Neurosurgery, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, Surgery and Vascular services.

The paid work week averages 24 hours a week for eight weeks.

Criteria

Applicants should provide:

  • Transcript of at least one semester of college credit showing cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Three letters of reference
  • Essay (not to exceed 400 words) on why you want to be a physician

Applications from those who completed Baptist Health’s Health Occupations Class and/or Baptist Health Explorer Post 2501 will receive bonus points in the scoring process.

Accepted students will complete drug and TB testing, background check and other employment requirements for all new Baptist Health employees prior to the academy start date.

The academy will begin with two days of orientation for all members of the class before each member begins individual rotations.

Near the end of the summer program, all participants and their families will be invited to join hospital leadership and medical staff for a recognition reception.
