Pediatrics (HHK)
Pediatrics clinic occurs at Hu Hu Kam as a two week block. There will be two weeks to familiarize the
resident with special techniques in examining children and special considerations given to prescription
medications.
In-patient Medicine (HHK)
This rotation requires one month of dedicated service to the medicine team. You will admit, work-up,
order diagnostic studies, diagnose, and plan the treatment of extremely complex medical patients with
multiple system complications.
Behavioral Sciences (HHK)
This rotation occurs while at Hu Hu Kam where for two weeks there is a team dedicated to teaching
behavioral science. You will use this information throughout the remainder of your residency and
career.
Emergency Medicine (HHK & PBH)
One month is used as a block for emergency medicine where the resident functions as an emergency medicine
physician working on whatever comes in. This occurs at both facilities, thus two total months the first
year. On call duties to each hospital keep the resident going back into the emergency department throughout
the remaining program years.
Wound care & surgery (HHK & PBH)
Wound care and the surgery related to wounds is a large part of this program. This is ongoing at each
facility through the clinic at Hu Hu Kam and the clinics at Phoenix Baptist and Paradise Valley Hospitals.
Quarterly evaluations are to be done.
Podiatric Medicine (HHK & PBH)
Podiatric medicine is ongoing working in the clinic at Hu Hu Kam and Phoenix Baptist. Both include
inpatient podiatric cases, which overflow into podiatric surgery. Again quarterly evaluations are to be
completed.
Podiatric Surgery (HHK & PBH)
Podiatric surgery is ongoing as it will be the rest of your career. The time spent at Hu Hu Kam will be
mainly generated by the clinic. That time spent at Phoenix Baptist will be mixed between your clinic
generated surgical cases and community attendings’ surgical cases. Evaluations will be completed
quarterly. This year emphasis is placed in basic tissue handling, dissection techniques, suturing and
gross mechanics of performing the procedures in all areas of the foot and ankle.
Pathology (PBH)
At Phoenix Baptist Hospital we have a team of pathologists who love to teach. This rotation is a block
month spent in the lab working with the pathologists and all of the technicians from the serology and
chemistry lab to the microbiologist.
Anesthesia (PBH)
This rotation is one month of working with the anesthesiologists performing preoperative assessments,
choosing anesthesia, injecting, inducing, intubating, and maintaining anesthesia, monitoring the patient
and extubating through to recovery.
Diagnostic Imaging (PBH)
This rotation is a one month block used the first year to familiarize the resident with the radiology
since you will spend a great deal of time there throughout the program. You will read radiographs,
participate in contrast studies, work with the MRI, CT, and Ultrasound technicians. The interventional
radiologists are a large portion of this rotation.
Rheumatology (PBH)
This is a one month block working with Dr. Eric Peters. The resident will make rounds on rheumatology
consultations and see patients in a clinic setting.

emphasis is on developing the mechanical skills of surgery with detailed information and repetition
on every area of the foot and ankle.
Infectious disease (PBH)
Infectious disease is encountered with nearly every in-patient our service has, but there is this one
month with Sen Jou, MD involves the resident rounding with the infectious disease physician to compare
and contrast perspectives on the treatment of infections.
In-patient medicine (PBH)
This rotation requires one month of dedicated service to the medicine team. You will admit, work-up,
order diagnostic studies, diagnose, and plan the treatment of extremely complex medical patients with
multiple system complications.
Out-patient medicine (PBH)
This is a one month block working in the Family Medicine Clinic at Phoenix Baptist Hospital. As any
other resident you will be assigned a senior resident and attending to work with. You will work-up,
diagnose, and treat whatever comes in. This is a highly academic rotation as well; teaching evidence
based medicine wherever possible.
General surgery (PBH)
This rotation is with Charles Matlin, MD performing rounds, clinic duties, and surgery at all times of
day and night. The residents will also rotate on an ongoing basis with Dr. Matlin regarding vascular
surgery.

year is to apply the consequences of your actions in surgery to the surgical outcome and better select
your procedures, perfect your technique, and be better prepared thus mastering the full scope of
procedures from toes to ankle. Please remember that the senior resident scheduled for Podiatric
Surgery at Phoenix Baptist is responsible to Orthopedics every 6th week for trauma call.
Vascular surgery (PBH)
This rotation is ongoing with Charles Matlin, MD on all inpatient cases we manage together and
interesting cases that Dr. Matlin invites the resident to. Evaluations are to be done quarterly for
all residents working with Dr. Matlin that period.
Plastic surgery (PBH)
This rotation is a one month block working with Sood Suchart, MD performing reconstructive and elective
surgeries. Since Dr. Suchart also works in Phoenix Baptist Hospital’s Wound Clinic some wound care as
an ongoing basis is available to assure adequate exposure to plastic techniques in flaps and grafts.
Orthopedic surgery (PBH)
This rotation is ongoing for the third year resident taking trauma call with various orthopedic
surgeons at Phoenix Baptist Hospital. The resident scheduled in podiatric surgery will have sole
responsibility to the orthopedist performing ER call, patient work-up and medical clearance, surgery,
and follow-up as deemed appropriate by the attending.
