The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act)includes legislation regarding HIPAA Compliance and receiving electronic protected healthinformation (ePHI) on your cell phone as a text message. The fines are scary – up to 1.5 million formultiple offences. Ignorance of the HITECH Act and how to encrypt your messages will not be anexcuse.

This CME program will update you on the HITECH Act and what BHS is doing to protectphysicians and the hospitals and maintain proper compliance with the HITECH Act, HIPAA lawsand text messaging patient information.

Educational Objectives:
Through lecture and question and answer discussion, the participant will be able to:
  • Describe the HITECH Act as it pertains to ePHI and text messages
  • Discuss how to avoid and protect yourself from potential fines
  • Assess avenues to encrypt messages to be in compliance with the law
