History

Established over 40 years ago, Phoenix Baptist Hospital (PBH) is a 216-bed, non-denominational, acute care, community teaching hospital located in the heart of the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Phoenix Baptist Hospital has always been and continues to be an active partner in the growth and development of the health and wellness of the communities it serves.

In 1961, a group of physicians opened Children's Hospital, an 85-bed children's osteopathic hospital, in a newly constructed three-story facility on 19th Avenue just north of Bethany Home Road in Phoenix. When financial difficulties resulted in the closure of Children's Hospital after only one year, the Southern Baptist Convention of Arizona purchased the hospital and converted it for use as an 85-bed, voluntary, church-operated, not-for-profit, general medical and surgical hospital. The hospital reopened as Baptist Hospital of Phoenix.

In 1971, the Arizona Southern Baptist Conference relinquished ownership and the hospital became an independent, voluntary, not-for-profit institution with title vested in its volunteer board of directors. The next year, the campus expanded to include a three-story hospital tower and three-story medical office building and parking structure. In 1973, PBH opened Arizona's first outpatient surgery center in the 3-story medical office building.

The Family Practice Residency Program at Phoenix Baptist Hospital was established in June of 1978, a giant step in strengthening PBH's reputation as a leader in family care. Over the next two years, the campus expanded again with a new emergency department, main lobby and fourth and fifth floors on the medical tower, along with a new medical office building and parking structure.

Due to the success of Phoenix Baptist Hospital, Baptist Hospitals and Health Systems, an integrated health care network, was formed in 1981 to promote future growth and expansion. PBH became an affiliate of this parent company. Over the years, Baptist Hospitals and Health Systems acquired affiliates in Arizona, Florida and California. These included hospitals, family medicine centers, long-term care facilities and home care services.

During the 1980s and 1990s, PBH saw growth in the areas of cardiac care, orthopaedics, nuclear medicine, maternity services and home health care. In 1998, years of construction and renovation came to an end with the completion of a major expansion of outpatient care facilities and grand opening of the state-of-the-art outpatient surgery and treatment center.

Phoenix Baptist Hospital is now a part of Abrazo Health Care, the second largest health care provider in the Valley and in the state of Arizona. Abrazo Health Care operates five hospitals in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, including Arrowhead Hospital, Maryvale Hospital, Paradise Valley Hospital and West Valley Hospital. Other affiliates include TMC Advanced Imaging Centers and Phoenix Health Plan, a state-funded, Medicaid insurance plan.
